Personal liability in France: the invisible essential
Ask a French insurer for standalone personal liability and they will point at your home policy: « responsabilité civile vie privée » comes bundled in virtually every multirisque habitation — and it is one of the most powerful covers you own.
What it does
It pays for damage you — or your children, houseguests, domestic employees and pets — accidentally cause to third parties: the bike crash injuring a pedestrian, the child breaking a neighbour’s window, the dog biting a jogger. Ceilings run into millions for bodily injury. Schools, sports clubs and activity providers routinely ask for an « attestation de responsabilité civile » : download it from your home insurer’s app — you almost certainly already have the cover they demand.
What it does NOT cover
Motorised vehicles (cars, motorcycles, e-scooters — separate mandatory insurance; check whether your policy covers electric scooters at all, a live gap in many contracts). Professional activity (RC Pro territory). Intentional damage. Damage to your own family — no « third party », no cover. Hunting (separate mandatory cover) and category 1-2 dogs (declaration or dedicated cover required by law). High-risk sports may be excluded — read the list before the paragliding course.
Expat angles
Coverage usually follows you worldwide for temporary stays (typically up to 3 months, sometimes a year — enough for holidays and studies), making separate « travel liability » redundant for short trips. Conversely, if you keep no French home policy, you have no liability cover in France: visitors and second-home owners should check their home-country policy’s territorial scope. Families with children: French schools require liability proof for optional activities — plus an individual-accident cover for the child’s own injuries, which the liability policy never pays. That pair (RC + individuelle accident) is exactly what French « assurance scolaire » products bundle for €10-40/year.
