Introduction

A motorhome is neither a car nor a house, and that is exactly what makes insuring it in France tricky. It is driven like a vehicle, it can be rented out, it stays still all winter, it carries valuable belongings, and its conversion (habitation unit, solar panels, awning, bike rack) can be worth as much as the base vehicle. Caravans and trailers add another question: who covers them when they are hitched, and who covers them when they are not? This kit answers these questions in the order you meet them: before buying (licence, weights, registration), when taking out a policy, during the life of the vehicle (winter, renting out, travel) and after a claim.

The rules are those of the French Insurance Code (code des assurances), Highway Code (code de la route) and Planning Code (code de l'urbanisme) in force on 23 October 2026. The licence rules are those given on the official page Service-public.fr F2827, last checked by the administration on 9 March 2026. Letters to your insurer must be in French: each template in chapter 9 is in French, followed by its English translation so that you know what you sign.

How to read it: chapter 1 sorts the vehicles and what the law requires for each; chapter 2 covers licence, weights and registration; chapter 3 gives the grid to read a French policy; chapter 4 is about caravans, trailers and static homes; chapter 5 covers winter storage, lending and renting out; chapter 6 travel; chapter 7 claims; chapter 8 six worked cases; chapter 9 the letters; chapter 10 checklists, calendar and glossary.

Five vehicles, five sets of rules: what French law requires

The starting table

Vehicle (French term)What it is legallyThird-party liabilityWhat to check first
Motorhome (camping-car, autocaravane)A motor vehicle fitted for living, registered as suchCompulsory as soon as it can be driven, even when parked (Insurance Code, art. L211-1)Its gross vehicle weight (PTAC) and your licence
Converted van (fourgon aménagé)A van that has been converted; it remains a van until its registration is changedCompulsory, like any motor vehicleThe vehicle type on the registration certificate: it decides how the insurer sees it
Caravan (caravane)A towed habitable vehicle without an engine, which the Highway Code allows on the road (Planning Code, art. R111-47)Trailers fall within the motor vehicle's compulsory insurance (art. L211-1)Its gross weight: 500 kg and 750 kg are the two thresholds that matter
Trailer (remorque: luggage, bike, motorbike)A towed vehicle without an engineSame rule as a caravanIts gross weight and the trailer clause of the car policy
Static caravan / mobile home (mobil-home, résidence mobile de loisirs)A transportable dwelling that the Highway Code forbids on the road (Planning Code, art. R111-41)No motor insurance: it is insured like a homeWhat the campsite requires (a liability certificate)

What compulsory cover pays, and what it does not

Article L211-1 of the Insurance Code requires anyone whose liability may be engaged by a land motor vehicle, and by its trailers or semi-trailers, to be insured for damage caused to others. This is the legal minimum, called responsabilité civile or au tiers. It pays the people you injure and the property you damage. It pays nothing for:

Everything else depends on optional cover, and that is where the quality of a leisure vehicle policy lies.

Three questions that prevent most refused claims

  1. Is the vehicle declared as it really is? Registration type, conversion, value, usual parking place. An inaccurate statement can reduce the payout, or void the policy if it is intentional (art. L113-8 and L113-9).
  2. Is your real use the use in the policy? Private use, renting to third parties, travel outside Europe, living in the vehicle all year: each changes the risk and must be declared (art. L113-2).
  3. Do the ceilings match the value? A policy may pay new-for-old for two years and then at expert valuation, and cap contents at a fixed sum whatever their value. Both figures are in the schedule (conditions particulières).

If you are moving to France with your motorhome

Once you are resident in France, a vehicle you keep must be registered in France, within one month of settling according to the official guidance. Your foreign insurer will usually stop covering a vehicle whose owner lives abroad, or once it is registered in another country: ask it in writing how long it covers you, and take out a French policy before that date. A French insurer can cover a vehicle with foreign plates while the French registration is under way; tell it so.
